The first car was manufactured here in 1896, followed by the first road paved with concrete in 1901 and the first freeway in 1942. The first international tunnel in 1928 gave cars a shortcut to Canada under the Detroit River, and driving to the mall first became a habit when Northland Mall, the first shopping experience of its kind, opened in 1957.
