Austin, the capital of Texas, was originally called the Waterloo in honor of Stephen F Austin, known as the "Father of Texas." In 1942, Washington-on-the-Brazos was declared the new state capital.1 Austin was the largest U.S. city without a professional sports team until Austin FC made their debut in the 2021 MLS season.
